RCD
The Residual Current Device, commonly referred to as RCD, stands as a cornerstone of electrical safety, essential in safeguarding both residential and commercial settings. Its pivotal role cannot be overstated.
In essence, an RCD is a guardian against the perils of electric shocks, potentially saving lives by identifying discrepancies between the outgoing and incoming total current across multiple circuits. It operates on a straightforward yet effective principle: if the current entering a circuit does not match the current exiting, the surplus electricity must have diverted elsewhere.
This phenomenon, often termed 'earth leakage', is the 'Residual Current' referenced in the RCD's designation. Such leakage can stem from a variety of electrical mishaps, like faulty wiring or accidental damage from common DIY activities, such as inadvertently drilling into a cable while hanging a picture or mowing over a cord. In these instances, the stray electricity may opt for the path of least resistance, potentially traveling through the tool into the individual, creating a hazardous circuit and leading to electric shock.
