RCD
The Residual Current Device (RCD) stands as an indispensable guardian of electrical safety for both residential and commercial settings. Its role is pivotal in ensuring safety and peace of mind.
An RCD provides lifesaving protection, shielding individuals from potential injuries and fatalities caused by electric shock. It achieves this by meticulously detecting any imbalance between the total outgoing and incoming current across specified circuits. Essentially, it operates on a simple yet profound principle: if the incoming electrical current doesn't match the outgoing current, it must diverge somewhere else.
This anomaly, known as 'earth leakage,' or 'Residual Current' as highlighted in the RCD's name, can arise from various issues such as faulty electrical wiring or DIY mishaps. For instance, inadvertently drilling through a cable while installing a picture hook, or slicing through a cable with a lawn mower, can redirect electricity. The electricity seeks the path of least resistance, potentially coursing through tools like a lawn mower or drill, thus creating a dangerous circuit that can lead to electric shock for the user.
