SPD Surge Protective Devices are engineered to offer robust defense against transient surge conditions. Major surge events, like lightning strikes, can unleash voltages in the hundreds of thousands, leading to immediate or sporadic equipment malfunctions. However, lightning and utility power irregularities contribute to only 20% of these transient surges. The overwhelming 80% originate internally. While these internal surges may be lower in magnitude, their frequent nature can gradually erode the performance of sensitive electronic devices within a facility.


A power surge represents a short-lived overvoltage episode capable of inflicting damage to electrical devices, often resulting in equipment failure. Surges have the potential to harm and diminish the longevity of:

NEW 2020 National Electrical Code Requirements
All newly constructed and renovated homes must be equipped with Listed and Approved Type 1 or Type 2 Surge Protective Devices, ensuring comprehensive protection.

Type 1:
A permanently connected Surge Protective Device, safeguarding against both external and internal surges. It is versatile enough for installation inside or outside residential premises.

Type 2:
A permanently connected Surge Protective Device installed in proximity to a breaker box. It provides reliable protection against internal and external surges.

Type 3:
Offers additional protection. It is a point-of-use Surge Protective Device and must work alongside Type 1 or Type 2 SPDs to comply with the 2020 code requirements.
