RCD
The Residual Current Device, or RCD, stands as a cornerstone of electrical safety in both residential and commercial settings, offering indispensable protection for modern living.
In essence, an RCD is designed to shield against the peril of electric shock, significantly reducing the risk of injury or fatality. It ingeniously detects any discrepancy between the outgoing and incoming current across multiple circuits. Operating on a straightforward yet effective principle, if the electricity entering a circuit doesn't match what exits, it indicates a diversion elsewhere, necessitating immediate attention.
This phenomenon, technically known as 'earth leakage,' also referred to as the 'Residual Current' in the device's name, can arise from several issues including substandard electrical wiring or unintended accidents such as piercing a cable while hanging a picture or accidentally severing a wire with a lawn mower. In such instances, the diverted electricity may choose the path of least resistance, potentially flowing through a tool or appliance and traveling into the person handling it, thereby closing the circuit and resulting in an electric shock.
